“The darkest days are ahead of us,” Andrew whispered as the drape of shadows slipped away, allowing Blair to awaken. And in her heart of hearts she knew it was true. The unmistakable signs were all around her, growing within her. She was becoming something more than human. All she could do was accept the inevitable.
“I’ve become a freak … an alien. I no longer belong to the human world,” Blair told her true love, and he held her close, determined never to give her up.
“I’d stay in this darkness forever as long as I could be with you. Wherever you are … that’s my home.” Everett meant every word. In fact, he’d willingly give up his own life to protect the girl he’d always loved.
But there was a storm brewing … a firestorm so strong and catastrophic that it could keep them apart forever.
That storm roared into town wearing a brown leather bomber jacket and riding a motorcycle.
Ash was like a secret in human clothing … a dangerous secret. Everything about him was mesmerizing – right down to the swirls of ink that flowed over the smooth muscles across his chest and around his arms. Being with him was like playing with fire.
Blair knew all about playing with fire.
She knew something else, too. A small quiet voice deep within whispered that she really would be separated from everyone and everything she’d known and loved.
Because some secrets run too deep.
I had been a bystander all my life, standing on the sidelines and observing others as they went along their ways. Watching wasn’t a pastime I’d done out of fear or shyness. I’ve just always felt more comfortable observing from a distance. Doing so gives me the opportunity to see the bigger picture … the grander scheme … the finished puzzle.
Despite the fact that I grew up in a small, inconsequential southeast Texas town, I’ve had a great deal of opportunities to observe and learn. The past few months, for example, were a virtual encyclopedia of just how weird things can really get — not to mention how bad they can get. I’ll be putting the pieces of that puzzle together for a long time before I realize what the final picture is.
But that’s beside the point. Life as I knew it was over. Gone. Forever. The only thing that remains the same is my constant companion — the dread that resides in the dark spaces deep within. It whispers that some secrets run too deep … it whispers that the worst is yet to come.
And I believe it.
This letter is over-due.
It’s nearly impossible to get the privacy to write. At this very moment, I’m crouched in the darkness. I wish I had my laptop. Don’t be mad or hurt that you haven’t heard from me. It’s something that I can’t help. But I miss you so much, Blair.
It’s getting close to summertime here where I am, but it’s dark. Being this far from your light is like torture. My soul is filling up with this darkness that feels like it’s going to eventually overtake me. I need your light, my firefly. I need you to light up.
I wish I could see your pretty face and hear your voice. I wish I could kiss you and hold you tight against me again. I’ll never forget that evening in the forest and how beautiful you looked surrounded by fireflies. We belong to each other forever. At least I know that my heart will always belong to you.
Don’t forget me.
I love you,
PS: Research fireflies. You will find out something about yourself that you are looking for.
